My primary goal in reading is to help students become strategic, lifelong, independent readers. I use a variety of techniques to teach the fourth grade reading content standards. One method that will be used is whole group instruction. Each story in the Wonders book (which is also available online) will have vocabulary words that will be tested. The vocabulary words will be sent home on Mondays on a sheet of colored paper with the spelling list. Weekly selection assessments and additional assessments will be completed online to show your child’s reading abilities.
In order to meet the needs of each child, I will use other types of reading instruction. Centers will be used for students to practice skills at their own developmental level. Students will be grouped according to their needs and read challenging books chosen by the teacher. Students will also read selected appropriate novels that go along with the curriculum to show their understanding and prepare for fifth grade. They will also have at least 15-20 minutes of silent reading each day to enjoy books of their choice. Accelerated Reader quizzes will be taken to monitor independent reading progress. Also, I read aloud for 15 minutes a day to enhance vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills. Students will have an opportunity to visit the library every week as well.
